Abertillery Piranhas Swimmers Matthew Jayne and Matthew Gummer both travelled to Ponds Forge Sheffield in order to compete in the 2009 British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships. Both Swimmers put on some blistering performances to see them set personal best times in all of their events. Their results were as follows:

The boys are now heading to the Welsh Summer Nationals this weekend where they are aiming to achieve further targets before their end of year breaks.
Well done Boys
Meet Report: Torfaen Sprints 2009
On the 27th and 28th June 2009 a team of 34 swimmers from Abertillery Piranhas Swimming Club, travelled to the South East Wales Regional Pool at
On arrival the team began to warm up on poolside in unison in their bright club colours sending out a signal that we are here to perform.
The event started for Abertillery Piranhas with 2 pb’s coming from Ellie Plumley (2:30.23) and Abi Jayne (2:30.57) in a close 200 Fc race. This was just the start of the string of good results from the weekend. In total throughout the weekend 151 personal best times were set by Abertillery swimmers during the heats and finals sessions. Abertillery swimmers; Daniel Atkinson, Molly Beetham, and Ayesha Matthews also picked up the best swimmer awards in their age groups with many other Abertillery swimmers hot on their tails for the awards. Abertillery also entered 2 teams in the Mixed 250m Cannon relay events finishing 2nd and 7th respectively.
As the good results were coming in the rest of the team, feeding off the positive atmosphere within the team, raised their game to perform, and be a part of the pb frenzy. Unfortunately there were too many big achievements to mention but the swimmers that represented Abertillery Piranhas Swimming Club promoted themselves and their club very well throughout the weekend. The feedback from other clubs, swimmers, and parents alike was testament to the performances produced by the Piranhas team.
Whilst some swimmers are now looking towards holidays in the near future, many of the Abertillery Piranhas swimmers are now back in training and heading towards the Welsh and ASA Summer Nationals Events, with increased confidence after their results from the weekend. Both Matthew Jayne and Matthew Gummer are well on their way to achieving their goals after some blistering performances over the weekend.
Head Coach Matt Tutton stated that; “This was definitely a step in the right direction for the club and all of the swimmers involved. The way in which the swimmers performed individually and as a team pushing each other to success was a pleasure to be a part of. I would like to extend my thanks to the swimmers for their efforts and professionalism over the weekend and also to my support coaches; Ian Eke, and Rhian Jayne who as always excelled themselves in providing the support required to run a team so effectively.”

There were some very good swims from Abigail Jayne, Bethany Collier, Ellie Plumley, Nathan Rimes, Rhiannon Vaisey and Samuel Prosser.

Piranhas take a bite out of the medal tally with impressive haul
15 Nov 2007
Abertillery Piranhas and Heads of the Valleys swimming club joined forces to organise the inaugural Greater Gwent Fastwater open swimming meet at Newport’s international sports village. The event, held at the end of October, attracted nearly two hundred swimmers from as far away as Plymouth and Bradford. Both hosting clubs were exceptionally well represented with 45 of their swimmers competing over the weekend.
Piranhas’ swimmers did exceptionally well with 70% of the swims resulting in personal bests. The team of Macauley Probert, Matt Gummer, Matt Jayne, Alex Scholefield, Owen Dobbs, Luke Hart, Lucy Hale, Ayesha Matthews, Rhiannon Nancarrow-Lei, Abbie Williams, Grace Hart, Claire Brackpool, Jack Dobbs, Abigail Jayne, Bethany Collier, Rhiannon Vaisey, Gabrielle Burgham, Philip Hale, Sam Prosser, Mathew Eke, Nathan Eke, Katrina Hillman, Ellie Plumley, Bethan Eke and Jonathan Eke, won a grand total of 66 medals.
The meet was extremely well run, thanks to the efforts of the members of both clubs who gave up their time to organise everything in the months leading up to it and the volunteers, judges and timekeepers who gave up the temptations of a glorious Autumnal weekend to help manage the swimmers and spectators over the 2 days. The feedback from visiting clubs and swimmers was very positive, and arrangements are already starting for next years event.
The meet raised £220 for its nominated charity Otto’s fund, which raises money for children with cancer. For more information see ottoschallenge.co.uk
More information about both clubs can be found on their respective web sites abertillerypiranhas.co.uk and hvsc.co.uk

SWIMMING A TEAM of eight to 16 year olds representing Abertillery Piranhas swimming club travelled to Neath swimming club to defend the John Hunkin Trophy the club won last year. The team of James Williams, Abbi Williams, Amy Cartwright, Abbi Jayne, Matt Jayne, Ayesha Matthews, Bethany Collier, Clair Brackpool, Grace Hart, Luke Hart, Lucy Hale, Owen Dobbs, Katrina Hillman, Nenagh Acock Jones, Rhiannon Nancarrow Lei, Rhiannon Vaisey, Sam Prosser, Phil Hale, Nathan Rimes, McCauley Probert, Matt Gummer, Charlie Rodgers, Brandon Davies and Sarah Haynes were faced with stiff competition from Neath, Aberavon, and Neath Valley swimming clubs. Despite the majority of the swimmers taking part in races against opponents who were one or two years older than themselves the Piranhas soon opened a significant lead. Neath Valley fought back strongly and with nine of the 49 events remaining Abertillery’s lead had been reduced to 13 points. However superb swimming from the relays squads left the other clubs trailing and the Piranhas retained the trophy. Congratulations to Cynfelyn Nancarrow Lei who represented the club with distinction at the ASA Age Group and Youth National competition in Sheffield. Congratulations also to Ayesha Matthews for showing that swimmers sometimes get to visit more interesting destinations when she represented the Welsh Regional Squads in Guernsey. While there she broke the meet record winning Gold in the 50m backstroke and also won bronze in the 100m backstroke. |

SWIMMING Abertillery Piranhas A TEAM of eight to 13-year-olds from Abertillery Piranhas made the journey to Leominster to compete in the final round of the Ross League, secure in the knowledge that a top two finish would guarantee a place in the final. On arrival the swimmers were pleased to see that this pool, unlike the one in the previous round, had a shallow end and a deep end, meaning that diving was not going to be an issue this time. Space for the spectators was at a premium, and the swimmers enjoyed the sight of their parents sweltering in the poolside heat. Once the meeting began it was clear that there were only two teams in contention. Abertillery won 10 of the first 20 races to open a 10-point lead. After 39 races this lead had slipped and the Piranhas were five points adrift in second place. With just the relays to go the gap was an almost insurmountable 11 points and, despite winning seven of the nine relays, Abertillery finished second by two points. The swimmers representing the club were: Katrina Hillman, Olivia England, Sam Prosser, Bethany Collier, Lucy Hale, Philip Hale, Nathan Rimes, Ellie Plumley, Alex Scholefield, Abigail Jayne, Matthew Jayne, Jessica Box, Brandon Davies, Matthew Gummer, Nenagh Acock-Jones, Matthew Eke, Francesca Hyde, Natasha Cartwright, Laurie Faulkner, Rhiannon Vaisey, Abbie Williams, Holly Murphy, Macaulay Probert and Grace Hart. The team retired beaten but unbowed and look forward to gaining revenge at the final in Gloucester on June 16.
If you would like the benefit of professional coaching, the club is running adult swimming sessions between 8am and 9am on Saturday mornings. The cost is £2.50 per session. Call 01495 230801 for further information – or just turn up |
Swimming: Testing times for Abertillery Piranhas
May 10 2007 |

Staff Reporter, Gwent Gazette |
A team from Abertillery Piranhas Swimming Club sacrificed the temptations of a glorious Saturday afternoon to compete in the PGL Ross league. The league is for swimmers aged between eight and 13 and comprises eleven English teams, and Abertillery. After a three-hour journey to Oxfordshire the team was met with a rather unusual sight. Swimming pools are simple things - they are normally rectangular with a deep end and a shallow end. Whoever designed this particular pool decided that was far too conventional - and so designed one that was shallow at both ends and deep in the middle. In swimming the start is vital a good dive start will gain a swimmer three metres over an opponent who pushes off from the side. The meeting organisers decided that without a certificate of competence, no-one would be allowed to dive into the shallow water. The three English teams duly provided evidence but Abertillery, unaware this was going to be needed, were unable to provide anything. The meet started with the swimmers from three teams diving in - and Abertillery not. Predictably, after 10 races Abertillery were last. Good sense then prevailed, and everyone was allowed to dive.
After 20 races the Piranhas were third, after 39 second, and with six of the 56 races left it was neck and neck. However, a strong finish by Worcester won them the meet, with Abertillery second.
The swimmers, Olivia England, Sam Prosser, Bethany Collier, Lucy Hale, Philip Hale, Jamie-Leigh Rimes, Nathan Rimes, Ellie Plumley, Alex Scholefield, Abigail Jayne, Matthew Jayne, Jessica Box, Brandon Davies, Matthew Gummer, Nenagh Acock-Jones, Matthew Eke, Francesca Hyde, Cynfelyn Nancarrow-Lei, Natasha Cartwright, Laurie Faulkner, Emily Brown, Abbie Williams and Hannah Poole all swam brilliantly and should be congratulated for conducting themselves so well under such difficult circumstances. |
